Akva!

Akva!

In the calm before the storm of Festival month, or for some in the after party zone following the Edinburgh Food Festival, Scran Saloneers once more congregated for a fun evening of food and drink.

It was our first visit to Akva, the newest addition to the growing portfolio of pubs that includes our regular home at Hemma.

As with most trips away from the mothership, the venue had a very different feel to it, so we had a very different event. Rather than lots of at the front microphone action, we gathered round the range of lovely people who’d brought stuff for us to sample.

First up we had Jaggi from Organo Coffee who told us about his “healthy coffee” then let us sample it. This was good stuff and the audience were highly appreciative. If you want to follow up with Jaggi, drop him a line at support@getlifebetter.com

Our next course was courtesy of regular contributors Soul Sushi. Budge and Tom have been great supporters of the event, so it’s always lovely to have them along. This time they were showcasing some of the items they have on the menu at their Sushi Nova pop-up at C-Nova venue in India Buildings, on Victoria Street. As usual, their food was a big hit, with the hosomaki and the wasabi attracting particular praise.

To round things out, we had sweet treats from both Lea and Danielle, who are baking stalwarts always ready to share their latest creations. Danielle had baked a delicious cinnamon brioche and Lea had created a fantastic grasshopper cake, including making her own creme de menthe. These were both hoovered up in record time.

There was some chatter about ScranFest, then we chipped in to #ScotFood Twitter discussions, while we sipped more ale and reflected on a filling and enjoyable evening.

So a big thanks to all at Akva for having us. I really liked the upstairs space where we met, the good beer selection including two tasty Pilots, the welcome from all of the staff, and the general feeling of fun and frolics that pervades the place. We’ll definitely be back.

Next month, we break from our usual first-Monday-of-the-month pattern to link up with the Travel Massive and our pals from Zomato for a big celebration of the Year of Food and Drink. It will take place at Badabing on Monday 21 September, with full ticket details here. We look forward to seeing y’all then.
