It was rather a special Scran Salon, this month, with the evening dedicated to seeing Danielle Ellis, founder of Edinburgh Foody, off in style as she moves on to pastures – and baking challenges – new.
The evening – hosted once more at the excellent Akva – was part pot-luck supper, part showcase of the talents of our fantastic audience.
With effusive thanks given to Danielle for her outstanding contribution to the food community in Edinburgh, we took time to thank all of our contributors, particularly those who’d brought something along.
It was great to have so many returning friends with their excellent products. Danielle had baked, of course, Toby Jones had brought us a mountain of pulled pork, there was outstanding charcuterie from Rachel Hammond, salads of distinction from Union of Genius and Annette Sprague from Redwood Bistro, and delicious Isle of Mull cheddar and courgette muffins, and gin cake from Lea Harris.
Lunchquest’s founder MJ had made outstanding pecan pie with pecans from her orchard in Alabama, regular saloneer Stan had brought cheese from Mellis, and there was so much else in the way of sweet and savoury goodness.
We had new friends, too, with Karen and Nathan from Bon Accord telling us all about their new range of drinks. From a rhubarb soda to a cloudy lemonade to tonic water, the audience was appreciative of these delights.
In further liquid refreshment, Danielle had some of the toast beer she’d brewed in partnership with Bakery Andante and Stewart’s. It was warmly received.
All that was left was to give a shout out to the current batch of QMU Gastronomy students who are busy with their dissertations. So if you know lots about the history of gin in Scotland around the year 1700, or you are the mother of a primary age child or grandmother of children at least on solids up to 11 years old, give us a shout and we’ll connect you to the needy student.
Next month we break from tradition with an event on the SECOND MONDAY. But it’s going to be a belter in collaboration with Dram & Smoke as part of their August residency at the Biscuit Factory. We expect to see you there!
