June 2016 – The Cakey One

We’re not great fans of over-engineering our events, but we couldn’t have put together a better cakey fest than last night’s event if we tried.

Lea Harris always does sterling work for us on the cake front and this month was no exception with another very boozy gin, tonic and lime cake.

Lea’s cake was joined by fantastic dessert shots from Sebastian Kobelt, the Master Chocolatier whose shop is in Linlinthgow. Sebastian couldn’t make it in person, but he’s a good friend of the salon and has sent cake before, so we were more than happy to share stories of his latest adventures.

And we had our friends from Strumpets who had brought a mountain of cake for everyone to devour. The lovely Hayley, Ingrida and Jessica told us the tale of their William Street shop which is serving excellent coffee and cake. They’ve recently added a second grinder to showcase a bespoke blend from local roaster Mr Eion.

It seemed a suitable point to pause for people to sample the cakey goodness.

After a wee break, we heard from Helen Vass, one of the winning team from the recent Bake Off Creme de la Creme series. She was highly appreciative of the cakeworks on display and keen to work on collaborative projects, not least with some of the folks she ran into this evening.

Then came regular saloneer Viv who told us all about the next phase of her fantastic work on the Food for Thought programme. This will see even more schools involved covering even more of Scotland. Make sure to get involved in this vital work in any way you can.

We then heard from another regular, Danielle, who will soon be departing Edinburgh for pastures new. She told us about the renewed crowdfunding activity from the Edinburgh Food Social, which will launch on 15 June. Our next Scran Salon will be an opportunity for us all to mark Danielle’s magnificent contribution to Edinburgh food.

We rounded things out a packed evening with a returning friend, Louise from the Fireside Collective, who told us about the upcoming Dram & Smoke events at the Biscuit Factory throughout August. Read all about it here.

What’s more we’ll be hosting our August Scran Salon with them, which should be excellent fun.

But before that, we look forward to seeing y’all again in July for more Scran fun and games.
